Description
No. 41 Queen Square is a shop that has been converted into an amusement arcade, dating from the 1870s. It is built in stucco with ashlar dressings and features a parapeted roof in the Italianate style. The building has four storeys, with a single window range facing Queen Square and a five-window range on Exchange Street, where the ends and center project forward, creating recessed curved corners.
The ground floor has a 20th-century shop front that is based on the original design. The first floor features a string course and consoled projections above bold flower motifs, while the second floor has a sill course and a platt band above. Panelled pilaster strips adorn the second and third floors, and there is a top frieze and cornice with a parapet.
The shop front includes round-headed windows set between panelled piers, with a frieze and cornice above. The first-floor window has three round-headed lights flanked by slender colonnettes. The second floor features a window with a consoled pediment above a four-pane horned sash, and the third floor has an architraved window with a four-pane horned sash. The angle of the building has architraved windows with bowed sashes, including a round-headed window on the second floor. The return to Exchange Street mirrors the front, with bays that project forward and similar details, while the center has paired round-headed windows on the second floor and some blind windows. The rear of the building is similar but simpler. This property is included for its group value.
