Description
The war memorial, located to the southwest of St Peter's Church on Lich Gates, was unveiled in 1922. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar and features a tall structure with a square base set on two round steps. The plinth has weathered capping and is adorned with recessed squat pinnacles that have foliated caps, along with raised lettering in sunk bands. The shaft of the memorial has rebated angles with fillets, and the base displays the town arms at the front and wreathed cartouches on the sides. Upper niches contain figures of St George at the front, a soldier and a pilot on the sides, and a sailor at the rear, topped with a stepped cap. This memorial is noted for its inclusion of the figure of a pilot, which is a rare feature.
