Description

The National Westminster Bank, built around 1905, is located in Queen Square, Wolverhampton. This building is designed in the Edwardian Baroque style and features a symmetrical layout with a prominent curved corner bay. It stands three storeys tall and consists of 11 bays, including five bays facing Exchange Street. The structure is built of ashlar stone on a granite plinth, with channelled rustication on the ground floor and pedimented end bays on the first and second floors, which project forward and are adorned with an Ionic arcade. The top of the building has an entablature, and the segmental pediments on the end bays display cartouches featuring the monogram NPB, representing the National Provincial Bank, along with a balustraded parapet.

The ground floor showcases round-headed windows with console keystones, decorative iron balconies, and original fixed glazing. The windows on the first floor are framed with architraves, featuring 15-pane sash windows with triple keystones and segmental pediments on the end bays. The second floor has 12-pane sash windows with aprons. The entrance at the corner bay is marked by a Tuscan aedicule with granite columns and relief decoration on the pediment, which supports two seated draped figures flanking a cartouche that reads "ESTBD/1833." The entrance to the first bay is simpler, with a cornice and a round window above. The building has three chimney stacks.

Additionally, there is a three-bay annexe facing Exchange Street, which has a similarly rusticated ground floor and brick upper floors with stucco architraves. Inside, the bank features Ionic columns, ceiling beams with guilloche moulding, and a rear glazed dome.
