Description

43 and 44 Queen Square is a house that has been converted into a shop and office. The building is dated 1726 on the rainwater head, with a mid to late 16th-century rear wing. It is constructed of brick with stucco dressings and features a hipped tile roof with brick stacks. The early Georgian style building stands three storeys tall and has a symmetrical five-window range. The top has a modillioned cornice and end quoin strips. The windows are topped with brick segmental arches and fielded-panelled keystones, featuring late 19th-century horned sashes, with the second-floor windows having four panes each. An attic gabled dormer window is present. The ground floor has a 20th-century shop front. There is a large cross-axial stack, a plain rainwater head, and a square downpipe, with a tile street name located at the fifth bay.

The right return to Lich Gates is similar and consists of eight bays, with a quoin strip to the right of the fifth bay and higher windows to the right. The shop front continues for the first five bays, followed by two flat-arched windows and a blocked entrance. The attic features a gabled dormer window and a cross-axial stack. The rainwater head has a monogram, crest, and the date 1726, along with a square downpipe and a tile street name. The north end of the west elevation facing Exchange Street includes a 16th-century timber-framed gabled bay with brick underbuilding on the ground floor and a jettied gable supported by enriched brackets. The 20th-century casement windows in this section have leaded glazing. Inside the rear wing, there are chamfered beams and jointed cruck trusses.
