Description
Hill Cottage is a house dating from the late 16th century to mid-17th century, with alterations and additions made in the 19th century. It is constructed of roughcast brick and features a tile roof with roughcast end stacks. The building has two storeys and a three-window range, with a platt band over the ground floor. The windows are segmental-headed and have small-paned casements, except for an oriel window with a cornice on the first floor at the right end. The entrance, located to the left of centre, is framed by a gabled porch and has a coped gable with a round-arched entrance, leading to a 20th-century inner door.
At the rear, there is a central gabled wing that includes a two-storey canted bay with a hipped roof, along with a single-storey gabled wing featuring a triangular oriel to the left and a bay window with a cornice to the right. Some windows have leaded upper lights.
Inside, the cottage has stop-chamfered beams and timber-framed cross walls. The rear room features 19th-century panelling, while a first-floor room contains an early 20th-century mural painting that illustrates the history of the cottage. Historically, the house was recorded in the 16th century as the Blue Bell Inn.
