Description

The entrance canopy, lodges, and gates to Springfield Brewery were built in the 1880s. They are constructed from brick with ashlar dressings, featuring cast- and wrought-iron elements and a slate roof. The structure includes an elliptical-arched gabled canopy that covers two pairs of gates, with the outer gates being narrower. There is a central cast-iron gate pier, and the lodges are designed with two-bay round-arched blind arcades set on blue brick plinths, complete with imposts, keys, and hood moulds. The cornices add to the architectural detail.

To the left of the gateway, there is an entrance with a plain lintel. The canopy is adorned with an enriched wrought-iron grille that displays a falcon and hop crest along with the lettering "M & B SPRINGFIELD BREWERY." The moulded bargeboards are topped with a turned wooden finial. The gates feature decorative finials and friezes, while the outer gates are plain. The gate pier includes a lantern, and cast-iron blocks are positioned at the angles. The returns to the lodges have sill and lintel bands; the left return has a girder for the lintel and an inner screen with 8-pane sashes and a half-glazed door.
