Description
The Conservatory, built in 1896 by Dan Gibson, is located in West Park, Wolverhampton. It is constructed of brick with terracotta dressings and features a timber superstructure supported by iron stanchions. The design includes three gabled bays, with the central bay featuring a rectangular lantern. There are gabled porches at the front and sides. The bays are distinguished by terracotta Ionic pilasters, and the structure has a dentilled timber entablature and dentilled gables. The glazing consists of small panes in round-headed panels, with similar panels on the lantern, which also has a glazed domical vault. The porch is adorned with paired Ionic angle pilasters and an entablature, and it has paired half-glazed doors with a fanlight. At the base of the steps, terracotta urns were originally present but were missing at the time of the last survey in 1990. The porches on the returns are similar and gabled at the front. West Park was designed by V.H. Vertegans between 1879 and 1881, on the site of the former Broad Meadows racecourse.
