Description
The Villiers Statue, located in West Park, Wolverhampton, was erected in 1878 and created by the sculptor W. Theed the younger. This statue is made of ashlar and features a high plinth that supports the figure of the Right Honourable Charles Pelham Villiers, who is depicted in 19th-century dress and holding a scroll against a draped stand. The front of the statue bears an inscription that reads: "CHARLES PELHAM/ VILLIERS/P.C., M.P./BORN 3RD JANUARY 1802,/DIED 16TH JANUARY 1898./AGED 96 YEARS." The rear inscription highlights his lengthy political career, noting that he served as Member of Parliament for Wolverhampton for 63 years. In 1931, the statue was relocated from its original position on Snow Hill. West Park itself was designed on the site of the former Broad Meadows racecourse between 1879 and 1880 by V.H. Vertegans.
