Description

The bandstand, built in 1882, is located in West Park, Wolverhampton. It was designed by McDowell Stevens & Co of Glasgow. The structure is made of cast iron and sits on a brick base, with the original cast-iron roof replaced by fibreglass in 1976. The bandstand has an octagonal shape, featuring inner columns with a barleysugar twist on round plinths and Corinthian capitals. The openwork spandrels support round arches, while the outer columns are fluted and have smaller capitals. The enriched balustrade has three sections missing as of the last survey in 1990. The bandstand is topped with an ogival roof and a weather vane. The park itself was designed by V.H. Vertegans between 1879 and 1881, on the site of the former Broad Meadows racecourse.
