Description

Brookes Works is a former saddle works and shops dating to 1890-91, with an extension around 1900 and minor 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and slate roofs, featuring several tall brick stacks. It is four storeys high and arranged in a T-plan.

The street façade incorporates shops at ground floor level, separated by painted pilasters and featuring a continuous entablature and fascia boards. A central passage entrance is defined by a segmental arch and ashlar keystone. To the left of the entrance are single shops, leading to offices above. Each shop has a recessed doorway and plate glass window with overlights. To the right, a pair of doorways with stained glass overlights are flanked by large shop windows, also with stained glass overlights. The upper two floors exhibit tall giant pilasters, with cross casement windows within segmental arches, each arch featuring an ashlar tympanum and keystone. The second and sixth bays are narrower, with 2-light cross casement windows. The top floor is dominated by a central round-headed window with an ashlar keystone, flanked by pilasters and topped with a curved gable featuring ashlar coping and finials. Single 3-light cross casements are situated either side, with further 2-light round-headed cross casements in matching gables, and 3-light casements at either end.

The rear courtyard, accessible through the central passage, provides access to a six-window, four-storey workshop range. It incorporates an off-centre doorway and 2-light glazing bar sashes to the right. Segment-headed cross casement windows with glazing bars are positioned above the first and second floors, while the third floor has similar flat-headed windows.

Internally, the original staircase retains turned balusters and a tiled dado. The upper floors feature original fireplaces, doors, and plaster coving.
