Description
Taylor's Music Shop is a music shop built in 1893, designed by sculptor J Lea. It is constructed from white Hollington and red Penkridge sandstones and features three storeys with an attic and three bays. The ground floor has a mid-20th century shop front, situated below a cornice and flanked by pilasters with granite shafts. The first floor also features pilasters between the bays, made of red sandstone and intricately carved with musical instruments. The capitals of these pilasters are adorned with the heads of famous composers: Handel, Bach, Mozart, and Haydn. Each bay has a frieze depicting a biblical scene: the fall of Jericho on the left, David playing before Saul in the center, and the Ark entering the Holy City on the right. The first-floor pilasters are decorated with foliage and have Corinthian capitals. The entablature includes a frieze carved with foliage and musical instruments. Above this, there is an elaborate parapet with a central attic window that projects upwards within a round arch and is topped with a cornice, featuring volutes on each side. At the outer corners of the parapet stand statues of Euterpe, the Goddess of Music, and Melpomene, the Goddess of Poetry.
