Description

SANDWELL MB BIRMINGHAM CANAL SP 08 NW Birmingham Level, Smethwick 9/10 Hartley Bridge, Chance's Glassworks 21.7.78 (approx 230m west of Spon Lane South)

GV II

Bridge. Early to mid-C19. Sandstone with parapets partly of brick. Single segmental arch with voussoirs rusticated in honeycomb pattern. Low parapet with stone coping. Attached to the western parapet is a cast iron plaque inscribed: "HARTLEY BRIDGE". The bridge spans Telford's New Main Line, which was built in a cutting on the Birmingham Level and was opened in 1828. It formerly linked the northern part of Chance's Glassworks (qv) with build- ings to the south of the canal which were probably developed from the 1840's onwards. (VCH p 115).
