Description
The memorial to James Chance, built around 1900, is located in West Smethwick Park. It is constructed from brick and terra cotta and features a central structure flanked by concave walls, which are approached by steps. The walls end in brick piers and include terra cotta seats. The centerpiece is adorned with paired columns that support an entablature featuring a decorated frieze and a modillion cornice, topped with a broken pediment that has swept sides and a central finial. Inside the central oval recess is a bronze bust of James Chance. Below the bust is an inscribed plaque that reads:
"James J Chance MA JP DL. For fifty years a partner in the firm of Chance Brothers & Co at the Glass Works Smethwick and at the Akali Works Oldbury.
"He purchased the land for the Park, laid it out and endowed it and on September 7th 1895 opened it a gift to the public for ever. He also made the roads on the east and west boundaries."
