Description

Pensnett War Memorial is a First World War memorial, built around 1927 and altered after the Second World War. It is made of limestone and bronze and is located at the east side of the junction of High Street and Elgar Crescent, near the Grade II-listed Church of St Mark.

The memorial features an ashlar pillar that is triangular in shape, standing on a two-stepped hexagonal base. Each face of the pillar has a carved relief of a Latin cross at the top.

On the east face of the pillar, there is a nowy-headed bronze plaque adorned with wreath and shield details. This plaque bears an inscription that honors the seventy-five men of Pensnett who are among the one million dead of the British Empire from the First World War, stating that they died in various parts of the world and that their graves are cared for by their families. It notes that some are buried in the nearby churchyard, with their names remembered forever. Two identical plaques list the names of the 75 servicemen who fell in the First World War.

Above this dedicatory plaque is another bronze shield-shaped plaque that expresses gratitude for the men of the parish who gave their lives in the Second World War. There are two additional shield-shaped plaques listing the names of those who fell in the Second World War, with a smaller rectangular plaque beneath one of them that includes an additional name.
