Description
The Old Bull's Head Public House and Brewhouse is a public house and brewhouse built around 1900. It is constructed of red brick with some terracotta dressings and features Welsh slate roofs with coped gable ends and kneelers. The building has brick axial and gable-end stacks with cornices. The layout includes two bars in the main front range and a brewhouse wing at the right-hand end.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical west front that has four windows on the left and two on the right, with the latter being single-storeyed and topped with a parapet that has a console bracket. The ground floor displays brick pilasters with a terracotta frieze and entablature, while the bar windows have overlights with leaded panes, bracketed angles with small pendants, and etched glass. The central and right-hand doorways also feature similar overlights and glazed doors. On the first floor, there are four sash windows with margin panes and a stringcourse. Above the central doorway, there is a large sign plaque with a pedimental top and shaped apron. The rear of the building has single-storey outshuts on the right and a brewhouse wing on the left, which includes a three-storey tower.
Inside, part of the partition between the two bars has been removed, but the interior remains largely intact with most of its original fittings, including the bar, matchboard dados, wall seats, and chimneypieces. The brewhouse retains its original equipment, including three mash tuns made by E. Potterton and Son, Brewers Engineers, of Birmingham, along with various brewing implements.
