Church Of St John

1. 5106 HIGH STREET SO 98 NW 6/198 Brockmoor Church of St John II 2. Commissioners' Church. 1844-5, by Thomas Smith. Plum brick with yellow brick dressings; stone-coped shallow-pitched gabled Welsh slate roofs with carved faces to kneelers. Cruciform plan with vestry north of short chancel, extruded turrets in west angles of transepts and west porch. Neo-Norman style. All bays recessed and articulated by yellow brick pilaster buttresses with corbels to frieze beneath blocking course. One- bay chancel has 3 graduated lancets with waterleaf capitals to engaged shafts. Two-bay transepts:lancets have hood moulds with head stops over engaged shafts to waterleaf capitals and chevron arches; north and south gables have 3 plain graduated lancets. Nave has four-bay north&south elevations with similar lancet windowsand carved heads to chevron cornice; west gable has cornice continued as frieze and bellcote set on projecting bay flanked by similar lancets and with similar surround to doorway set in gabled porch. Interior: plastered walls; chancel has coffered ceiling, engaged shafts to fine late C19 stained-glass window, panelled dado and chamfered chancel arch set on engaged shafts with scalloped capitals; similar arches to transepts; plain pitch-pine pews; octagonal font with foliate capitals to marble shafts; roof trusses all have 3 central posts concealing wrought-iron tie bolts. A good example of a Neo-Norman Commissioners Church. (Buildings of England: Staffordshire, p.80).
