Description

The Harris and Pearson Entrance Building is an office and weigh house for the Harris and Pearson brickworks, constructed in 1888. It is built from yellow bricks with blue brick bands and terracotta dressings, topped with a plain tile roof featuring bands of scalloped tiles and coped gable ends. The building has an L-shaped plan, with a carriageway running through the main front range and a wing extending to the rear left. Inside the carriageway, there is a weighbridge.

The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical three-bay front, featuring a 2:3:2 window arrangement. The bays are separated by brick pilasters topped with terracotta ogee caps. The central bay is gabled and includes a finial, with an elliptically arched carriageway adorned with a keyblock and imposts. There are similarly arched windows on the left and right, and a tripartite window above the carriageway in a similarly arched recess. Moulded stringcourses and a terracotta inscription reading "HARRIS and PEARSON" are located above the carriageway. At the rear, there is a gabled wing on the right with a stack on the splayed corner, and the carriageway in the block has a rolled steel joist above. Inside the carriageway, the iron weighbridge is inscribed "To weigh 20 tons. S. Denison and Son Ltd. Leeds." The interior has not been inspected. Harris and Pearson specialized in making firebricks, gas retorts, and glass-house pots.
