Description
No. 34 St Paul's Square is a Grade II listed building, dating from around 1780. This block originally consisted of two or possibly three townhouses on the north side of the square, with a return to Caroline Street. In the early 20th century, it was altered to function as a single property. The likely original layout included a five-bay house at the corner, adjacent to a three-bay front.
The building's elevations are now entirely covered in stucco, featuring a cornice that stops at a band with parapet coping. There is a sill course for the ground floor windows, which are set in plain stucco frames with block cornices. The first-floor windows still have their flat stone arches, which are detailed with grooved voussoirs and stepped keys. Between the second-floor windows, there are fielded panels. The windows are fitted with leaded casements.
The original doorway, which belongs to the presumed five-bay front, is still intact and is accessed via three steps. It features engaged Doric columns and sections of an entablature topped with a bracketed open pediment. The doorway has panelled reveals, a six-panel door, and a semi-circular fanlight. Additionally, short sections of 18th-century style railings are swept out to scrolled wrought supports.
