Description

Cogent Works is a complex of offices and a restaurant, originally manufactories with warehousing, constructed around 1902. It was designed by G.F. Hawkes, an architect from Birmingham, for E.L. Gyde, and converted to commercial use in 1989 by Mark Humphries. The building is constructed of red brick with painted stone dressings, coped gables, ridge and gable stacks, and slate roof coverings.

The building has an evolved double courtyard plan; the original southeastern yard is enclosed on three sides, while the later yard is open to the northwest. The front elevation facing St Paul's Square is in two phases, with seven bays built slightly earlier than the five bays to the right, both phases exhibiting identical detailing. The symmetrical frontage is three stories high and sits upon a deep blue brick plinth. The facade is arranged in a 2:3:2:3:2 pattern, with pediments incorporating oculi in the three-bay sections. The main entrance is through double doorways in bays 1 and 2, with tall overlights. Bays 3 and 4 feature 6-pane transomed windows with stepped sills. Bay 5 provides passage access, while bays 6 and 7 have tall glazed openings. Bays 8, 9, 10, and 11 contain late 20th-century glazed openings and paired 6-panel doors. A wide vehicle opening is located in bay 12, also with late 20th-century barred gates. Banded brick piers with painted capitals are positioned between the openings, and moulded cornices decorate the heads of the ground and first-floor openings, above girder lintels. Transomed window frames are present on the first and second floors.

The rear of the building features parallel eight-bay, three-story former workshop ranges with multi-paned cast iron window frames below girder lintels, and doorways leading to upper floors, which were formerly accessible by external stairs. Angled end bays form latrine towers. A seven-bay cross return projects from the left-hand workshop range at the end of the yard. The workshop ranges are topped with monopitch roofs.

The interiors have been remodelled to function as offices, shops, and a restaurant. Historical records, including existing building plans, indicate that the complex was originally developed in phases, beginning with Nos. 52-54. These early sections included basement levels, housing machine rooms, and providing office, warehouse, and packing areas on the ground and first floors, with workshops at the rear. The second floor housed additional warehouse space, with workshops across the rear ranges. The design of the front elevation was intended to reflect the 18th-century character of St Pauls Square. The complex forms a group with St Paul's Church. It represents a complete survival of an early 20th-century manufactory development within a historically significant industrial area of Birmingham.
