Description

ST PAUL'S SQUARE 1. 5104 Hockley B3 No 55 (formerly listed under City Centre) SP 0687 SW 28/19 21.1.70 II GV 2. Includes No 61 Charlotte Street. Circa 1780 originally 2 town houses on south-west corner of square, altered as one premises, early C20, with some changes in the fenestration and detailing. Three storeys red brick with entablature below eaves of hipped roof, all of early C20. Seven bay front to square, the upper floors with renewed glazing bar sashes, painted stone sills and flat arches with grooved voussoirs and keystones. The ground floor windows altered with a 5 bay arcade. Charlotte Street elevation has 3 bays with early C20 extension. Above doorway is a good original Venetian window with slender dividing columns andover it, on the second floor, is a sash window with gothic intersecting glazing bar pattern to upper sash under a cambered painted stone architrave arch, with keystone, returned down to small imposts. The fluted Ionic pilaster Tripartite ashlar doorcase is an early C20 addition as is the large cartouche - like sculptured advertising panel to the blind right hand bay. An important corner site.
