Description

No 55 on St Paul's Square is a building from around 1780, originally consisting of two townhouses on the south-west corner of the square. In the early 20th century, it was altered to function as a single premises, with some changes made to the windows and detailing. The building is three storeys high, constructed of red brick, and features an entablature below the eaves of a hipped roof, all dating from the early 20th century.

The front facing the square has seven bays, with the upper floors showcasing renewed glazing bar sash windows, painted stone sills, and flat arches that include grooved voussoirs and keystones. The ground floor has been modified to include a five-bay arcade. The elevation facing Charlotte Street has three bays, along with an early 20th-century extension.

Notably, above the doorway is an original Venetian window with slender dividing columns, and on the second floor, there is a sash window featuring a gothic intersecting glazing bar pattern in the upper sash, set beneath a cambered painted stone architrave with a keystone that returns down to small imposts. The fluted Ionic pilaster tripartite doorcase is an early 20th-century addition, as is the large sculptured advertising panel in the shape of a cartouche on the blind right-hand bay. This building occupies an important corner site.
