Description

11 Brook Street is a restaurant that was originally built as a warehouse around 1875, with some alterations made in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick with blue brick banding and painted dressings, featuring a single brick ridge stack and a slate roof.

The exterior presents an asymmetrical street elevation of two storeys and eight bays. There are two doorways, one of which is off-centre and likely leads to a former passage, flanked by wide windows—three on the left and two on the right. The other, wider doorway is located at the south-west end. The window openings have cambered heads with painted keystones, springers, cills, and linked hood moulds. The door heads are similarly decorated, with the central one featuring a cambered overlight. The first-floor windows are arranged in a 3:2:3 pattern, with the three at the south-west end having two over two light sashes with cambered heads, while the remaining openings are wider, featuring three over three pane sashes. The building also has dentil and dogtooth eaves courses and single-storey wings at the rear.

Historically, the building is depicted on the 1889 Ordnance Survey map and was identified as a warehouse. Directory entries from 1875 and 1886 list Chantrill and Co, merchants, as its occupants. It is noted for its group value with No. 15 Brook Street.

This warehouse is associated with local manufactories and is one of the few surviving examples of its type, contributing significantly to the architectural landscape of the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter, which is now recognized as an area of international significance.
