Description
No. 42A is a tall four-storey building located on the corner of St Paul's Square and Brook Street, dating from around 1880. It is constructed of bright red brick, featuring engineering brick and stucco dressings. The building has narrow window bays, with six to a square, which are articulated through the upper storeys by thin brick pilasters that have roll-moulded edges and foliate stucco capitals flanking the top floor window heads. A brick dentil cornice and a painted parapet complete the top of the building. On the longer side facing Brook Street, the pilasters are spaced wider apart, dividing the window bays into pairs. The ground floor features engineering brick arches with stucco keys and segmental stucco strings above, which are continuously linked on the ground floor and paired on the first and second floors of the return. A modern "Georgian" doorway has been inserted facing the square. This building occupies an important corner site.
