Description
Number 1 St Paul's Square is a three-storey red brick townhouse dating from around 1780, located at the corner with Ludgate Hill. The building features a three-bay front with a plinth and a main stucco cornice supported by small modillion brackets, along with a rebuilt parapet. It has revealed sash windows, some of which retain their glazing bars, painted stone sills, and flat arches with grooved voussoirs and keystones. The entrance is marked by a moulded wood doorcase that has a festooned frieze and a plain pediment.
In the 1860s to 1870s, the plain return elevation was extended down Ludgate Hill with a ten-bay, three-storey range of shops. This extension is also made of red brick, featuring some gault dressings and a rendered ground floor, with stucco sill bands. The windows in this section are close set, iron-framed, and small-paned, with round-headed windows on the first floor that have brick panels above, and segmental arched windows on the second floor.
