Description
No. 21 Ludgate Hill is a three-storey and basement red brick building, constructed around 1850-1860, located on the canal side. It features a four-bay front with a long range extending to Water Street. The building has an engineering brick plinth and a tall ground floor with engineering brick cornices above. The upper floors are distinguished by window bays set within a narrow two-storey segmental arched arcade, showcasing finely detailed brickwork. A prominent eaves cornice supported by console brackets adds to its architectural appeal. The plain elevation includes loading bays facing the canal, and all windows are segmental arched with glazing bar sashes and engineering brick moulded sills. The end facing Ludgate Hill has a semi-circular arched loading bay, which is recessed and features stone imposts and a key. To the right, there is a similarly detailed office door with a semi-circular arch. The Water Street range includes ground floor windows that are arcaded above the plinth, complete with keystones to the arches. This building is a well-preserved example of canal-side works situated on a corner site.
