Description

This is a pair of manufactories, built around 1900, and altered in the 20th century. They are located in Birmingham, with frontages on both Northwood Street and Caroline Street. The buildings are constructed of red brick with painted dressings, brick banding, coped gables, and a slate roof.

The plan consists of a linear range to the left (number 14) and a rectangular street corner plan to the right (number 15), which has a main frontage on Caroline Street, with a four-bay range extending northeast along Northwood Street. The right-hand part exhibits an eclectic Neo-Georgian style, while the left-hand part has a plainer Edwardian facade.

The Caroline Street elevation has three storeys and three bays. The right-hand part (number 15) features three tall, semi-circular arch-headed openings incorporating ground and first-floor windows. These arches have massive scrolled keyblocks supporting a moulded cornice. The ground-floor windows are multi-pane casements set on painted aprons between the arch piers. Painted girder lintels are present, with a set-back brick panel above, followed by three-light windows within the arch head. The upper floor has painted bands linking the moulded window surrounds and heads, shallow pilasters defining the bays, and supporting a moulded eaved cornice. The return elevation to Northwood Street has a single gabled bay echoing the frontage range. To the right, a three-bay secondary range features an open-pediment doorcase with a three-panel double door and a semi-circular overlight. A single sash window is positioned below a rubbed brick flat arch. A dentilled brick band runs along the first floor, with paired sashes below common girder heads set within plain brick piers. A wide two-bay vehicle opening is on the ground floor, below a painted concrete lintel with folding half-glazed doors. The left-hand frontage range (number 13) has a wide, advanced gabled centre bay flanked by narrower bays, with pilasters to the corners. The centre doorway has double doors and a shallow arched overlight. Narrow flanking two-light windows have shallow arched heads on a painted cill band. The outer bays have double doorways. Above, shallow arch-headed windows are on the first floor, arranged 1:2:1, with transomed frames. Flat-headed windows are on the second floor, and the centre bay has a wide multi-pane metal frame with a girder lintel. Cill bands run along the upper floor openings, and a lintel band is above the upper floor. The rear ranges to both parts enclose a narrow T-shaped yard.

The interiors were not inspected.

Now amalgamated, these are two former early 20th-century manufactories, displaying different but complementary architectural styles. They are prominently situated in a manufacturing district of Birmingham, now recognized for its international significance.
