Description

BIRMINGHAM

997/0/10372 WARSTONE LANE 29-APR-04 2

GV II Small manufactory. Late C19 with C20 alterations. Channelled stucco on brick, hipped roof with slate covering. PLAN: Acutely-angled L-shaped range with workshop range to rear. EXTERIOR: Warstone Lane frontage of 2 bays, 2 storeys with C20 shop front to left and display window and doorway to right, set beneath C20 canopy. First floor window openings with C20 3-light casements. Rear elevation with short storeyed workshop range extending south-west from rear of frontage range, with single gable stack. Listed for group value with No.7 Warstone Lane (q.v.), No. 6 Warstone Lane (q.v. ) and Nos. 3 and 5 Warstone Lane (q.v.) A small late C19 manufactory with surviving integral workshop range to rear, and forming part of a significant street frontage grouping of similar buildings at the heart of a manufacturing district of Birmingham now considered to be of international significance. The eccentric shape of the rear workshop ranges illustrates the pressure of development in the Quarter in the late C19 when even the most marginal plots could provide workshop space.
