Description
2 Warstone Lane is a small manufactory built in the late 19th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The building features channelled stucco on brick and a hipped roof covered with slate. It has an acutely-angled L-shaped plan, with a workshop range located at the rear.
The exterior includes a two-bay frontage on Warstone Lane, rising to two storeys. On the left side, there is a 20th-century shop front, while the right side has a display window and doorway, both set beneath a 20th-century canopy. The first-floor window openings are fitted with 20th-century three-light casements. The rear elevation features a short storeyed workshop range that extends southwest from the main building, complete with a single gable stack.
This building is listed for its group value with No. 7 Warstone Lane, No. 6 Warstone Lane, and Nos. 3 and 5 Warstone Lane. It is a notable example of a late 19th-century manufactory with an integral workshop range, contributing to a significant street frontage of similar buildings in Birmingham's manufacturing district, which is now recognized as internationally significant. The unusual shape of the rear workshop range reflects the pressures of development in the area during the late 19th century, when even the smallest plots were utilized for workshop space.
