Description

15 Vyse Street is a late 19th-century manufactory and shop, featuring minor 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of red brick with painted dressings, and it has chimney stacks on the north gable, topped with a composition slate roof.

The structure has an angled U-shaped plan, with workshop ranges at the rear that enclose a narrow yard. The exterior is two stories high and consists of a two-bay front. The entrance is located on the left, with a passage entry leading to the rear workshops on the right. The doorway has a rectangular overlight and is topped by a shallow bracketed cornice, while the door itself is from the 20th century. Above the entrance, there is an undivided sash window beneath a painted lintel and bracketed cornice. To the right, a full-height canted bay window features 20th-century awnings and glazing on the ground floor, with undivided sashes on the upper floor's bay cheeks and glazing bars on the lower center sash. The building has a deep plain eaves band, and further to the right is a semi-circular arch-headed narrow passage doorway with an infilled overlight.

The rear elevation includes attached workshop ranges on the north and south sides of the angled narrow yard, which is accessible only to pedestrians. This building is listed for its group value with No. 12 Vyse Street and Nos. 16-18 Vyse Street, contributing to an exceptionally well-preserved sequence of similarly scaled manufactories. It represents a small domestic-scale manufactory with surviving workshop ranges, situated within a street predominantly made up of industrial premises, both purpose-built and converted from dwellings, in a manufacturing district of Birmingham that is now recognized as being of international significance.
