Description

The Jewellers Arms Public House is a three-storey red brick building dating from around 1840, located on a corner site at Hockley Street and Spencer Street. It features a half hipped slate roof and soffit eaves. The front has three bays, while the adjacent No 27A has a slightly lower two-bay rear extension with a carriage arch on the ground floor. The public house front likely includes original pilasters that return for two bays along Spencer Street.

The windows have high vertically panelled risers and early 20th-century leaded lights. A frieze and cornice curve around the corner of the building. The left bay of the front has a narrow pilastered canted bay parlour window with attractive frosted panes. The central entrance features a pilastered doorway with console brackets supporting the cornice. The outer bays on the upper floors have glazing bar sash windows, while the central ones are blind, all topped with flat gauged arches.

No 27A has narrower 3 x 4 pane sashes with thinner glazing bars. The carriageway has a basket handle gauged arch, and there is a round arched passage entrance nearby. The section facing Spencer Street is slightly lower and has two storeys with three tall first-floor windows that once lit a former reception room.
