Description

2 and 4 Branston Street are a pair of mid-19th century shops, with later alterations, located in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter. The buildings are constructed of painted red brick featuring ornamental brick detailing, a central brick stack, and a Welsh slated roof topped with crested clay ridge tiles.

The shops have an L-shaped plan, with a short return wing to Hall Street. They stand two storeys high with attics and have three bays. The late 19th-century shop fronts have been altered but originally featured recessed doorways at either end. Below the multi-pane timber shop display windows are shallow stall risers, and above these is a continuous display fascia with advanced gabled capitals on the end pilasters. The first floor has three windows with 2 over 2 pane sash frames; the left-hand windows have shallow segmental arched heads, while the right-hand window has a keyed wedge lintel. The upper floor contains two low 2 over 2 pane sash frames and a 20th-century three-light casement frame.

This pair of shops is part of a group that includes Nos. 32-35 Hall Street and Nos. 36-37 Hall Street. They represent a rare surviving element of the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter, situated among small and medium-sized manufactories in this historically significant manufacturing district.
