Description
This is a group of three former jewellery workshops dating from 1907-1910, located in Great Hampton Street, Hockley, Birmingham. The buildings were originally designed as a single composition, displaying a mix of architectural styles.
The central workshop is faced entirely in cream terracotta with a green plinth. The workshop to the left is constructed of red brick with buff terracotta dressings, exhibiting a more demonstrative Arts and Crafts style. The workshop to the right is of red brick with sandstone dressings, featuring classical detailing.
All three workshops are of two storeys with a basement and six bays. The central and right-hand workshops share a design of vertical framed windows across both floors. However, the left-hand workshop stands out with two large, semi-circular arched ground-floor windows, each occupying two bays.
The end bays of each building are advanced and contain the doorways. The first two workshops have rounded-topped gables above the doorways, while the right-hand workshop has a cornice and parapet with swag-framed roundels. Much of the decorative leading in the windows has been preserved, and canted oriels are found in the end bays of the terracotta-faced workshop. The group exemplifies Edwardian and Arts and Crafts detailing for works elevations, representing an eclectic architectural approach.
