Description
The Great Hampton Street Works, located at 80, 81, and 82 Great Hampton Street, Hockley, Birmingham, was constructed in the 1880s as a purpose-built jewellery factory. This imposing building is three storeys high and exhibits a high level of craftsmanship in its design. It is constructed primarily of red brick, with painted stone, cut brick, and engineering brick dressings. The windows are arranged in varied ranges across each floor, set into moulded sills. A deep, bracketed cornice and parapet tops the building, above which sits a steep gable end roof with copings. Upper-floor windows are set within pointed arcades, while those on the ground floor, symmetrically arranged around a waggon entrance to the left and an off-centre doorway, are framed in similar surrounds. A drip mould string with stiff leaf stops and ornate dragon-carved stops links these windows. The name of the works is displayed in lively lettering within a band below the first floor. The building's elevation remains largely unaltered and represents a rare survival on this scale of Birmingham Gothic architecture from the 1880s.
