Description
Nos 71 and 72 Vyse Street are two houses dating from around 1840, and they are the remaining structures of a terrace of four. These two-storey buildings are constructed of red brick with finely pointed detailing and feature a stucco plinth. They have a shallow boxed eaves with an eaves band beneath a slate roof. The fronts consist of a single bay and a two bay arrangement, with No 71 having a near contemporary one bay extension that matches the original design. The windows are revealed glazing bar sashes with stucco sills; the ground floor windows have panelled stucco heads and are flanked by shallow consoles decorated with acanthus leaves, topped with thin cornices.
There are two main doorways accessed by three stone steps, featuring incised panelled pilasters adorned with a small anthemion motif and entablatures with projecting cornices. The doors are four-panel designs with moulding that returns to plain reveals, and they have marginal glazed rectangular fanlights above. Additionally, there is a side passage door in the extension of No 71. This property is an unaltered example of modest early 19th century domestic housing located in the jewellery quarter.
