Description
7 Warstone Lane is a mid-19th century manufactory that has undergone some alterations in the 20th century. The building features channelled stucco on brickwork with painted dressings and a slate roof with gable chimneys. It has an L-shaped layout, with a frontage range that spans the full width of the plot and an L-shaped workshop range to the left of the entrance passage.
The exterior is symmetrical with a four-window front across three storeys, and there is a central passage entrance leading to a rear courtyard. The doorway has a semi-circular arch head with a 20th-century door, surrounded by a painted arch head and grooved stucco. Flanking the entrance are wide display windows with tripartite 20th-century frames, set beneath shallow segmental heads and hoodmoulds with decorative dropped stops. There is a moulded cill band for the paired windows on either side of the entrance bay, with openings beneath bracketed hoods. The upper floor windows are shallower, with a blind opening at the centre and all featuring shallow hoods.
The rear elevation consists of a three-storey, eleven-bay workshop range that extends along the plot, with a three-bay return. The window openings have shallow arch heads defined by blue brick bands and feature projecting blue brick cills. The upper floor windows have flat heads at eaves level, with some having multi-pane cast iron frames.
Inside, the central passage encloses entrances to the workshops on either side. There is an enclosed stairwell on the eastern part and an open stairwell on the western side of the passage that provides access to the upper floor of the frontage range.
This building forms a group with No. 6 Warstone Lane to the east and Nos. 8 and 9 to the west. It is a mid-19th century manufactory with street-facing workshops and extensive rear workshop space, which has seen little alteration and showcases the distinctive architectural and planning characteristics of Birmingham's manufacturing district, now recognized for its international significance.
