Description
This is a circa 1780 row of town houses located on the north side of St Paul’s Square. Number 35, which occupies the corner with Caroline Street, remains of red brick, while the other houses are stuccoed. Numbers 36 and 37 would have originally formed a five-bay house, compared to the three bays of the others. The cornices feature small modillion brackets and blocking courses; the cornice of number 35 has been renewed with a cavetto moulding. The front of number 35 remains virtually unaltered, with renewed glazing bar sashes, painted stone sills, and flat arches featuring grooved voussoirs and stepped keys. The original doorway to the left is raised on three steps, with engaged Doric columns and sections of entablature culminating in a bracketed pediment. It has panelled reveals surrounding a round-headed doorway, accessed by a six-panel door with a fanlight. The other houses have some remaining window heads, but no glazing bars to their sashes. The resumed central doorway of numbers 36 and 37 has been replaced with windows to match. Number 38 features a large, mid-19th century panelled pilaster doorway with blind balustrading above the entablature. Number 39 has a doorway of a similar date, with tall, round-headed pilasters, a panelled side door, and a cornice hood. The return of number 35 to Caroline Street retains the original cornice, with two sides to the ground floor and one each to the upper floors on the right-hand side. Original lead rainwater pipes are visible on number 35.
