Description
Nos 85 and 87 Cornwall Street are a pair of buildings constructed in 1899 by William Henman and Thomas Cooper for Dr. J E Parrott. Designed in the Arts and Crafts style, they feature a subtly asymmetrical and interesting appearance. The buildings are made of brick and stone and stand three storeys tall with an attic. They have three main bays beneath a large gable, plus a fourth narrow bay that aligns with the street, which includes a narrow sash window in a moulded surround on each floor.
The ground floor is rectangular in plan, featuring two arched windows on the left, an entrance accessed by steps within an arched porch, and three narrow flat-headed sash windows on the right. Above this, two canted bay windows rise through the first and second floors, separated by French windows above the entrance that open onto balconies. The first-floor balcony is formed by a balustraded arcade, while the second-floor balcony is supported by a range of Tuscan columns. The fenestration of the two bay windows is completely different, with the left-hand bay at first-floor level appearing to indicate two floors.
In the gable, there is a tripartite window beneath a semi-circular pediment, with pedimented dormer windows on either side. The interior is not described. This building is part of an important group of houses.
