Description
Nos 89 and 91 Cornwall Street, built in 1904 by C E Bateman, are notable examples of Arts and Crafts architecture. The buildings are constructed of brick with stone dressings and rise four storeys plus a basement. The facade features five bays, with the first bay being blank, the third bay containing the entrance to No 91, and the fifth bay housing the entrance to No 89. The second and fourth bays have canted bay windows that extend from the basement to the second floor, where they are finished with a gadrooned frieze and cornice. All bay windows are sash style, adorned with rusticated heads and glazing bars.
The entrances are accessed by steps and are flanked by pilasters topped with open scrolly pediments. The entrance to No 89 has a tablet above it, while the entrance to No 91 features a small window with leaded lights and a shell hood. Oculi are present in bays 1, 3, and 5 at the second floor level. The third floor includes three sash windows set in moulded frames, each with super-arches that have diamond patterns in their tympana. Above this, there is a deep parapet decorated with wreaths and alternating chequerwork. This building is part of an important group of houses.
