Description
No. 93 Cornwall Street is a Grade II* listed building located in the city centre, constructed in 1902 by T W F Newton and Cheattle for Sir James Sawyer. The building is made of brick with stone dressings and features a green slate roof, designed in the Arts and Crafts style. It stands three storeys high, plus a basement and attic, and has three bays.
The ground floor includes two windows and an entrance that is accessed by steps, situated beneath a large flat moulded canopy supported by iron brackets. The first floor has three rectangular windows, each adorned with prominent keystones. The second floor also features three windows, but these have segmental heads. All windows are sash style, set within stone surrounds with aprons, and are connected across the facade by three broad stone bands.
Notable details include fine rainwater heads positioned to the left and right beneath a segmental parapet with upswept ends. The roof is enhanced by two pedimented dormer sash windows, which are heavier than the typical design. The property is further distinguished by splendid iron area railings of excellent design. There are no significant interior features noted. This building is part of an important group of houses.
