Description

Abbey House, also known as Number 22, is a pair of houses that have been converted into offices. They were built between 1834 and 1840, with some later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of reddish-brown brick with a painted stucco front facade and stucco returns, topped with a Welsh slate roof.

The exterior features two storeys with eight first-floor windows and a central tall carriage arch. There is a plinth at the base, and full-height Tuscan pilasters are located at both ends and between the windows, with the central pilasters being wider and having recessed panels. The central entrance consists of a tall, cambered carriage arch with double plank doors that include a pedestrian door. On the first floor, there are two outer 2/4 sash windows and six 3/6 sash windows in between, all with horns. The ground floor has two outer 4/4 sash windows and four 6/6 sash windows in between, all set in plain reveals with sills.

The entrances are located below the third window for Number 22, which has three steps leading up to a 4-panel door with an overlight featuring decorative glazing in fielded-panel reveals. The entrance for Number 18 is below the seventh window and has a step leading to a 4-panel door with an overlight in plain reveals. Both entrances are framed by Tuscan pilastered surrounds with an architrave, frieze, and cornice, topped with a central pediment.

The interior has not been inspected. Historically, Russell Street was laid out around 1834 to 1840.
