Description
Number 1 and attached railings is a house, built between 1836 and 1837, designed by William Startin. It is now used as offices. The building is constructed of pinkish-brown brick with a painted stucco facade, a Welsh slate roof, and cast-iron railings and a balcony. It has three storeys with an attic and a basement, originally featuring three windows on the first floor. The ground floor exhibits horizontal rustication. The first floor has a band interrupted by ten-pane French windows with margin-lights and blind boxes. The second floor has six-pane sash windows. A cornice and blocking course are also present. An attic dormer is visible.
The main entrance is accessed by three steps on the left side. The entrance itself has a six-panel door with an overlight within panelled reveals, framed by Doric pilasters, a frieze with end triglyphs, and a cornice. The windows are six-pane sashes in plain reveals with sills. The basement has late 20th-century casement windows. A raised gable end is present along with end stacks. A continuous balcony to the first floor has a balustrade featuring a heart-and-anthemion motif.
The interior of the building was not inspected. The railings across the front and along the sides of the steps have bars with double-oval and lance-head finials. Clarendon Place was laid out in 1825. The building forms part of a continuous architectural group with numbers 7 to 10 Clarendon Square.
