Description

A pair of houses built around 1837, with later additions and alterations including a late 19th-century extension to the left and a mid-20th century extension to the right. The builders were William Buddle Sr and Jr, who constructed the houses for their own occupation. The houses are constructed of brick with painted stucco facades, and have a Welsh slate roof.

The two-storey houses have an attic to the right, and feature six first-floor windows. They are characterised by Tuscan pilasters at the ends and centre. The first floor has six-over-six sash windows in plain reveals with sills. The ground floor has central entrances to each house, which are reached by four roll-edged stone steps leading to part-glazed doors with etched glass and elliptical overlights fitted with Gothic glazing, set within surrounds with fluted pilasters. The outer bays have two-over-two sashes, while the other windows are within canted bays, each with three single-pane sashes, and a cornice to the left. A section of the left bay has the ground and first floors as blind boxes. The roof is hipped with ridge and end stacks.

A two-over-two sash window with adjacent blind box is visible on the left return. At the rear, No.19 has a six-over-six sash window, while No.21 features a rectangular bay with stained glass. The interior of No.19 includes a staircase with stick balusters and a wreathed handrail.

According to local records, the builders lived in the houses before embarking on villa construction in Clarendon Crescent.
