Description
No. 2 Clarendon Avenue is a house, stables, and stableyard, now used as offices and part of a public house. It was built around 1818 and has undergone later alterations. The building features pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco facades and a Welsh slate roof.
The structure is L-shaped, enclosing a yard. It is two storeys tall with four first-floor windows, the second of which is set within a pedimented projection that includes an elliptically-arched carriage arch with a plank door. The ground and first floors have 1/1 sash windows, mostly with horns, except for a 3/6 sash above the carriage arch, all set in plain reveals.
On the right return facing Russell Street, the building also stands two storeys high with three first-floor windows. It has a plinth and 1/1 sashes with horns throughout, all in plain reveals with sills. There are two steps leading to a central entrance featuring a six-fielded-panel door flanked by pilaster strips and side-lights with glazing bars. Above the door is a frieze, a mutule cornice, and an elliptical overlight with gothic glazing, all in plain reveals with outer roll-moulding. The building has wide eaves and two tall roof and rear stacks with cornices.
Inside, the staircase is notable for its stick balusters. The property occupies a corner site.
