Description
51 and 53 Warwick Street are two houses that have been converted into shops with flats and offices above. They were built in the early to mid-19th century and feature mid-20th century ground-floor shop fronts. The buildings are constructed from pinkish-brown brick with a painted stucco front facade and a concealed roof, and they have cast-iron balcony railings on the left side.
The exterior consists of three storeys and three bays. The centre has horizontal rustication, while the ends feature banded pilasters on the first and second floors. On the first floor, the outer canted bay windows have six-pane French windows with divided overlights, all set between four-pane windows with sidelights. These are in plain reveals with tooled surrounds, a frieze, and a cornice. The central six-pane French window also has an overlight and margin-lights, topped with a flat arch and raised keystone.
On the second floor, the outer bays contain six-over-six and four-over-four sash windows, while the centre has a six-over-six sash window. All are in plain reveals with moulded sills. The building features a frieze, cornice, and a low parapet with sunk panels. Finials are present at the ends, although the left one is missing, and there are two anthemion acroteria at the centre. A left stack with a cornice is also visible.
The ground floor includes glazed doors within the glazed shop fronts. There is a continuous balcony on the first floor, adorned with a balustrade featuring an elongated figure-of-eight and circle motif.
Historically, Warwick Street was laid out around 1822 to 1826.
