Description
58 and 58A Parade is a house that has been converted into a shop and flats, dating from around 1818 to 1830, with later additions and alterations including a rear extension and a mid-20th century ground floor shop front. The building is constructed of pinkish-brown brick in Flemish bond, featuring painted stucco dressings, a concealed roof, and a cast-iron balcony.
The exterior has four storeys and two first-floor windows. The first floor features tall 6/6 sash windows, while the second and third floors have 3/6 sash windows, all with plain reveals and rusticated heads with keystones. There is a tall end stack with a cornice on the left side. A continuous first-floor balcony displays a Caron Company double-heart-and-anthemion motif.
Inside, the second and third floors contain a dog-leg staircase with remnants of stick balusters, while the ground and first floors have mid-20th century interiors.
Historically, the Parade was named in 1860. It was originally called Lillington Lane, then renamed Union Row around 1809 and later Union Parade by 1814. The lower section of the road was laid out and built between 1810 and 1818, while the upper section on the west side was constructed between 1827 and 1840. Initially built as houses, hotels, and lodging houses, most had transitioned to shops by 1850.
