Description

No. 44 Parade is a house that has been converted into a shop, built around 1818-1830 with later additions and alterations, including a mid-20th century shop front on the ground floor. The building has four storeys and features three windows on the first floor. Giant Ionic pilasters frame the ends of the first, second, and third floors. The first floor has tall 6/6 sash windows, while the second floor includes a continuous sill band with 6/6 sashes. The third floor has 3/6 sashes with sills, all set in plain reveals. The building is topped with a frieze and copings, and has tall end stacks.

On the right side facing Warwick Street, there is a round-arched staircase window that features a 3/9 sash with radial glazing at the top and margin lights, also in plain reveals and with a sill. A band runs along the gable.

Inside, there is an openwell staircase from the first floor that has stick balusters.

Historically, the Parade was named in 1860, previously known as Upper Parade and Lower Parade. Originally called Lillington Lane, it was renamed Union Row around 1809 and then Union Parade by 1814, before becoming the Parade in 1860. The lower section was laid out between 1810 and 1814, with significant building activity occurring from 1810 to 1818, while the upper section on the west side was constructed between 1827 and 1840. Initially built as houses, hotels, and lodging houses, by 1850 most had been converted into shops. The building occupies an important corner site.
