Description

No. 74 Parade is a house that has been converted into a shop with storage above. It was built around 1814 to 1836 and has undergone later additions and alterations, including a late 19th-century extension at the rear and a mid-20th-century ground floor and shop front.

The building has four storeys and features two first-floor windows. It is constructed of pinkish-brown brick with a painted stucco facade and a Welsh slate roof. On the first floor, there are tall 6/6 sash windows; the second floor has 6/6 sashes with sills, while the third floor has 3/3 sashes with sills. All windows are set in plain reveals with tooled surrounds. The rear of the building includes 6/6 and 8/8 sashes with plain reveals and sills.

Inside, there is a narrow open-well staircase with stick balusters between the first and second floors, and a similar dogleg staircase leading to the third floor. The interior features 4- and 6-panel doors, a fireplace with a fluted chimneypiece and a cast-iron fireplace on the second floor, and two marble chimneypieces on the first floor with double doors between the front and rear rooms, adorned with a frieze featuring a c-scroll motif. The third floor has a cast-iron fireplace.

Historically, the Parade was named in 1860. It was originally called Lillington Lane, renamed Union Row around 1809, and then Union Parade by 1814, before becoming known as the Parade by 1860. The lower section was laid out between 1810 and 1814, with further construction occurring from around 1820 to 1840. Initially built as houses, hotels, and lodging houses, by 1850 many of these buildings had been converted into shops.
