Description

A terrace of five houses, numbered 36 to 44, was built around 1824 in Portland Place, Royal Leamington Spa, with later additions and alterations. The houses are constructed of pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco facades, and have Welsh slate roofs to numbers 36, 42, and 44; the remaining roofs are covered with cement tiles. They are two storeys high with basements, and have ten first-floor windows. The house on the left of the terrace slightly projects. The first floor features 6/6 sashes throughout, with sills and plain reveals, alongside a cornice and a low parapet. The ground floor has three steps leading to side entrances, each with a four-panel door, some of which are part-glazed with overlights, all set within tooled architraves. Bay windows, canted from basement to ground floor, have a mixture of window styles; 6/6 sashes are typical, except at number 42 where they are 1/1 sashes with nine-pane fixed lights, casements, and part-glazed doors to access the basement. The building has ridge and end stacks. The interior was not inspected. The property includes area railings and railings on the sides of the steps. Portland Place itself was laid out in 1823-1824.
