Description
1-4 Satchwell Place is a terrace of four houses built in 1807 for Mrs. Hopton, the daughter of Mr. Benjamin Satchwell. The houses are constructed from reddish-brown brick in Flemish bond, featuring dressings of red rubbed brick and a Welsh slate roof. The terrace stands three storeys high and has six first-floor windows, with the second and fourth windows shared between adjacent houses.
On the first floor, the windows consist of six 6/6 sash windows, a pair of 2/2 sashes, two more 6/6 sashes, another pair of 2/2 sashes, and a final 6/6 sash. The second floor has three 3/3 sash windows, a pair of 2/2 sashes, two 3/3 sashes, another pair of 2/2 sashes, and a final 3/3 sash. All windows are set in plain reveals with sills and flat arches.
The ground floor features paired entrances with six-panel doors topped by fanlights that have decorative glazing bars, all within round-arched surrounds. The remaining ground floor windows are 6/6 sashes in plain reveals with sills and cambered arches. The terrace is topped with tall central and end stacks that have cornices. The name 'Satchwell Place' is painted on the front, centrally located.
Inside, No. 3 has a dogleg staircase with stick balusters and a turned newel post, although the other interiors have not been inspected. Historically, these houses were built as private boarding houses.
