Description

This building began as a Roman Catholic Church of St Peter in 1828, later becoming Boys' Club premises and a Mission Hall, and was disused at the time of its listing. It was designed by John Russell and Mitchell. The church is constructed of brownish-pink brick in English bond, with painted stucco facades, and has a Welsh slate roof. It is built in the Greek Revival style.

The plan includes a nave, chancel, transepts, and an additional range to the north. The west front features four three-quarter engaged giant Ionic columns which support a frieze and pediment. A step leads to the central entrance, which has a board door with plain reveals. Above the door is a hood on corbel brackets, beneath which is a fielded plinth and a round-arched niche containing a statue of St. Peter, with a moulded surround.

On the south return is a tall window with 56 fixed lights and margin lights, set within plain reveals and an eared architrave with sills. The south crossing (west side) has a board door with a hood on corbel brackets. The north return mirrors the south with a similar tall window. The north crossing (west side) includes a plank door within a surround of Doric pilasters, a frieze, a cornice, and a pediment. A further north range has a round-arched niche on a continuous band, containing an inserted casement window; this range abuts No. 15, Ashton House.

The interior features cast-iron window frames with painted glass margin lights. The apse, with a raised platform at the east end, has a stained-glass rooflight in the ceiling. The interior has been partially subdivided.
