Description

Numbers 4 and 6 are a pair of houses with attached railings, built around 1830-1840, with later additions and alterations, including a 20th-century extension to the rear of No. 4. They are constructed from pinkish-brown brick with a painted stucco front facade, topped with a Welsh slate roof and complemented by cast-iron railings.

The houses are designed in a single classical style and stand two storeys tall with an attic and basement. The front features four first-floor windows arranged in a 2:2 pattern. The outer bays project and are topped with pediments, while the ground floor showcases horizontal rustication. The entrances at each end have two roll-edged steps leading to three-panel doors; the left door is part-glazed, and both have overlights, with the right door featuring glazing bars and fielded-panel reveals. Each entrance is framed by a Distyle Doric porch, which includes engaged pilasters and columns, a frieze, cornice, and blocking course.

On the first floor, there are two 8/8 sash windows with horizontal rustication in the reveals, sills, and rusticated arches. Above the first-floor cornice, Doric pilasters support the projections. The first floor also has two 6/6 sash windows and two 2/2 sash windows, all with plain reveals, sills, and tooled surrounds. The basement features a plank door to the right and two 3/6 sash windows with margin lights in plain reveals. A frieze and dentil cornice extend to the pediment, with ridge and side stacks completing the roofline.

Inside, each house has a dog-leg staircase with stick balusters and a wreathed handrail. The properties also feature lancet area railings. They form a group with The Shakespeare Inn, No. 8 Church Terrace, No. 2 George Street, and Nos. 8, 10, and 12 George Street.
