Description
This is a terrace of four houses, numbered 4 to 10, built around 1827 to 1833 and altered later. The houses are constructed of pinkish-brown brick with a painted stucco front facade, and have Welsh slate roofs running north to south. They are arranged over three storeys and have an 8-window first-floor range, divided into sections of 2 windows each.
The houses have chamfered plinths and quoins. The first floor has a mix of 6/9, 1/1, 6/6 and 1/1 sash windows, some with margin lights, all with sills and plain reveals. The second floor has a 4-window range with 3/3 and 1/1 sash windows, also with sills and plain reveals. A cornice is followed by a low parapet with copings.
The ground floor has paired entrances. Two houses have a step up to a 6-panel door, while the other two have a 3-panel, part-glazed door. All have overlights, and are sheltered by a porch with a tristyle Doric frieze, cornice, and blocking course. Two houses have 6/6 sashes to the rear, and two have canted bays with 1/1 sash windows in the centre and to the sides.
Inside No.6, there is an openwell staircase with stick balusters and a wreathed handrail.
Binswood Avenue was laid out around 1828 and mostly built by 1834. The terrace forms an architectural group with No. 2 Binswood Avenue. The houses feature stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops.
